Part 2.
Selecting.
To select an image or a piece of an image we use the "Lasso Tool". (see above), or make a selection using various different ways which will be talked about later.
There are 3 different options for the lasso tool:
1. Lasso Tool
2. Polygonal Lasso Tool
3. Magnetic Lasso Tool
1. The Lasso Tool allows you to make a free-hand selection. I don't recommend using it because it isn't very accurate.
2. The Polygonal Lasso Tool is the tool I use most often. How it works is you click on the picture to make a set of joined-up points which form your selection area.
3. The Magnetic Lasso is a very clever tool which goes around the most prominent edges of your picture but it's sometimes quite hard to work, so that's why most people don't use it that much.
To make your selection, double-click around your picture and your selection will be made! (A dotted line will appear around its edges.) |

Part 3
Editing your selection.
1. You can edit your selection by going to
Image>>Adjustments>>...
For example
Image>>Adjustments>>Hue/Saturation... allows you to change the Hue, Saturation, and Lightness of your picture.
2. You can also go to
Filter>>...>>...
For Example
Filter>>Pixelate>>Crystallize...
will crystallize your selection.
These things can be done to your whole picture, as well as just a selection!
Other things to do with selections
A selection is generally good because you can do whatever to it and know you won't go out of the edges. Therefore you can of course use any tool eg.Brush tool, Blur tool, Dodge/Burn tool, etc. on any selection.
Feathering
Feathering basically means to make the edges of your selection a bit neater and also blurring them a bit. This is always a good thing to do!
Feather your seletion by going to
Select>>Feather...
Choose however pixels you need - most commonly it would be 5, less for a small selection, and more for a larger one.

Part 4.
A handy way of selecting.
If you use the Lasso tool to select, there is a chance you may accidentally double-click and muck up your selection, or lose it completely. That is why I have found another, more precise way of selecting.
For this we have to make something called a "Path".
1. Open your image.
2. Click on the Pen Tool.
3. Select the following icon:
This icon makes whatever you draw into a path.
4. Draw around your picture with the pen tool (this works pretty much like Polygonal Lasso except if you hold down the left-mouse button you can make it wiggle in various ways...also,you can undo every point you make in the History pallette.).
5. Click on the following button in the Paths pallette:
Your path will be made into a selection!

Hmm, nice tips, but most of them are shortcuts and I don't use them that much, sorry |
