This is the first of many items I will be contributing to this site. I hope
you enjoy them and find them useful.
1) Open a new File
Menu ->File->New
RGB - Transparent Background 72 pixel/inch
500 - 200 pixels
Make sure your layers pallet is open
2) Select Gradient Tool
Click on Gradient at top of screen.
Select Style - I used Brass -- but your choice
3) Apply Gradient to Layer 1
I went from top to bottom
4) Now we will age the metal a bit.
Menu->Filter->Noise->Add Noise
You can fool around with the settings, but I ended up using
80% - Uniform - with Monochromatic checked
5) Next add another filter
Menu->Filter->Artistic->Poster Edges
I used the following settings
Edge Thickness - 1, Edge Intensity - 1, and Posterization - 4
6) One More Filter
Menu -> Distort -> Glass
Settings -> Distortion 17, Smoothness 6, Texture Frosted, Scaling 99%
7) Now add text.
Select Text Tool
Pick the font you want.. Fat ones tend to work better
Color does not matter -- I used black
Add the Text you want
After typing your text, click on the Text Layer on the Layer Pallet.
The next sequence of steps will cut the text out of the texture you created.
a) First Hold down the control key and click on the Text Layer in the layer pallet,
this should select your text. (ctrl->click)
b) Inverse the selection - Menu->Select->Inverse
c) Turn off the type layer by clicking on the eye on the layer pallet.
You should still see your selection area.
d) Click on Layer 1 on the palette
e) Menu->Edit->Clear or press Delete key -- this will leave you with
your texturized text.
f) reselect the text - Menu->Select->Inverse
9) Now we will add an outline to border the text.
Menu->Edit->Stroke with the settings,
Width 2 px. Color: Black
Location: Outside, Blending Normal, Opacity 100%
10) Now for a simple 3d effect
Menu->Layer Style->Bevel and Emboss
Now here you have in infinet number of settings to play with..
You can see the ones I used.
11) The last step for now is to add a drop shadow.
Menu->Layer Style->Drop Shadow
Again.. lots of options here, Here are the ones I used.
12) Save the file as a PSD file if you wish to be able to mess with the
layer settings later. For use in a web page, I save the file as a "gif", which
preserves the transparency which allows the background color of your
site to peek through.
Options:
You can use steps 7 through 12 on any texture you want. Just simply
open a texture file ( millions on the net ).
Note: if you open an existing texture you must change the background layer
to a normal work layer.
Menu->Layer->New->Layer From Background
You can then pick up with step 7 and go from there. |

Another good program for making images and texturing text is Paint Shop Pro, I found Paint Shop Pro 8 to be a very good program and very useful, it can be found at http://www.jasc.com/products/paintshoppro/ you can download a trial version. If im not mistaken, it lasts for 30 days
i used it when i was making "images links" http://redweb.t35.com/link to us.html ,for my site so people could link back to it,The quality of text looks even better when the images are not real small. |
