I agree with everything that is being said. All these things are key points. However without a website with GOOD content and easy navigation, all these great techniques won't help much.

When submitting your website to a directory that will be reviewed by a human, it must be well structured and filled with relevent useful content or you won't see your site in the index.

So I think the number 1 rule to a successful website is a high quality website with good content.

yeah, agreed. The main key factor I feel is updating and good presenation and good content.

in my opinion a webpage ought to have an easy-to-use interface, to call it like that, and has to make a serious epxression. too much graphics are bad, and pop-ups or ads aren't good at all either...
sometimes they have to be but if possible, avoid them i would say...
also i think it is important to offer the customer/visitor etc personal and quick contact with the homepage owner to make it more friendly and faithful..
